In 2003, PFB Architects completed an Endoscopy Unit project at St. Alexius. Initially, the 6th floor of the west wing addition was intended to be shell space for future growth, but before the 4th and 5th floors were completed, the hospital made a strategic decision to relocate their Endoscopy program from an old, outdated and cramped space to new quarters.

Choosing the 6th floor provided more than 10,800 SF of space with views to the south, north, and an expansive overlook of a nature preserve to the west. This new location allowed more natural lighting of the pre- and post-procedure areas, promoting a more cheerful space for recovery. The unit was designed with 4 procedure suites, 8 prep / hold bays, and 8 recovery bays. Included in those numbers, a private room was provided in both the prep / hold bay and the recovery bay in the event that a situation required a greater degree of privacy, one of the private rooms including an ante-room and negative-pressure option for instances requiring respiratory isolation.
